A popular ghazal singer, Pankaj Udhas is best known for songs like Chitthi Aayee Hai' and Jiye Toh Jiye Kaise'. Trained in music by Master Navrang and Urdu lessons by Saeed Mirza, Udhas is credited with bringing the unique singing style of setting Urdu verses to music. Born in Gujarat, he studied in Sir BPTI Bhavanagar. After his family moved to Mumbai the singer studied at St. Xavier's College. During his early years, Udhas developed an interest in ghazals and learned Urdu to try to pursue a career as a ghazal singer. After finding little success, he moved to Canada and, after spending some time there and in the U.S. performing ghazals at small shows, he returned to India. Udhas' first singing role in a film was in the 1972 film Kamna, which was a flop. Although his first album Aahat was released in 1980, he actually rocketed the skies with the song 'Chitthi Aayee Hai' that he sang for the film Naam (1986). He is also known to have composed music for a few TV serials, apart from ghazals and film playback, and has also produced and hosted a series to unearth ghazal singing talent Aadaab Arz Hai.
