Rajiv Gandhi was sworn is as the 6th Prime Minister of India. He succeeded his mother Indira Gandhi. He became the Prime Minister of India for a second time and first time after elections.

4/3/1999Indian National Satellite (INSAT-2E), fifth satellite in INSAT-2 series, launched. This has multipurpose communication & meteorological capabilities. This is still in use. Launched by European launch vehicle Ariane, ISRO has leased eleven 36 MHz equivalent units of C-band capacity on board to INTELSAT organisation.

He was against dowry and child marriages and advocated widow re-marriage and also established institutions for vocational education and education for adults.
