Accession of Jammu and Kashmir was then officially announced. No. 12 Sqn was to initiate the remarkable feat of air-lifting the first Sikhs from Palam onto the rough and dusty Srinagar airstrip without planning or reconnaissance as the initial Indian response to the sizeable insurgent forces that were pouring across the border into Jammu and Kashmir.

5/20/1932Bipinchandra Ramchandra Pal, powerful journalist and revolutionary freedom fighter, passed away. He was amongst the trio which was known as ""Lal - Bal - Pal"" during the freedom struggle. He started a newspaper called ""Swaraj"" for the Indians in England. He also edited several other newspapers like ""Tribune"", ""New India"", ""Vande Mataram"", ""Swaraj"", ""Hindu Review"", ""Democrat"", ""Independent Bengali"", etc.
6/23/1984An Air-India jumbo jet plunged into the Atlantic Ocean near Ireland today, killing all 329 people on board. Indian officials said the crash apparently was caused by a bomb placed aboard the jetliner by a Sikh extremist group as retaliation for an army raid.
