12/20/1998Dr. B. V. Raman (86), a reputed astrologer, dies in Bangalore following a cardiac arrest. He was the Editor of The Astrological Magazine.
7/1/1947British Parliament passes the India Independence Act and fixes August 15 for the transfer of power.
9/21/1933Annie Besant, great social worker and founder of Home Rule Movement, passed away.
4/6/1930Mahatma Gandhi picked up a lump of natural salt for breaking the 'Salt Law'. He was arrested at Dandi. This movement gathered strength and within a month about one lakh people were sent to jail. This violation of Salt Law was the second great step in India's Freedom Movement.
7/15/1783Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy, great Indian Merchant, Industrialist and philanthrophist, was born in Bombay. He aided famine relief, financed public works like wells, roads, causeways and bridges; founded dispensaries and hospitals; established educational institutions and scholarship funds; etc. He was receipent of a Knighthood and many medals.
