Sikh Guru Har Govindji, the sixth sikh guru, was born. He fashioned a military role for the Sikhs.

8/14/1900S. K. Patil, Congress leader, was born.
8/15/1947Sir Cyril Radcliffe Award on the new boundaries of West Punjab, East Punjab, West Bengal, East Bengal and Assam.
1/15/1949General K. N. Kariappa became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief. He was the first Indian to reach to this post in Indian Army. In 1956, he was designated as Chief of the Army Staff - General, later Field Marshal. This event is commemoratively observed as Army Day.
10/29/1990Vinod Mehra, famous Hindi film actor, died.
6/18/1956New Hindu Succession Act was passed.
2/20/1968Dr Prafulla Kumar Sen and others performed the first ever heart transplantion in Asia. The operation was performed by the Indian surgeons at K.E.M. Hospital, Bombay.
3/17/1999An international seminar on UN Peacekeeping was co-jointly hosted by Ministry of External affairs and Ministry of Defence at New Delhi from 17 to 19 March 1999. The seminar was conducted by HQ Army Training Command, Shimla on behalf of the Indian Army. A total of 126 foreign delegates from 71 countries participated in the seminar.
1/6/1972America declared Naval Drill in the Indian Ocean.
4/13/1919Jallianwala Baug massacre. The great Indian tragedy occured in Amritsar which claimed 389 lives and wounded 1,516 activitists fighting for Indian independence. Early in 1919, the Rowlatt Act (Black Act) was passed. This authorized the Government to imprison any person without any trial and conviction in a court of law. This furious act was under the guidence of cruel Brigedier General R. E. H. Dyer and his 50 men troop. Michael O' Dwyer was then the Governor of Punjab who naturally defended the action. This day is observed as Jallianwala Baug Day.
